FL Studio 301: Advanced Production Workflows

Rishabh uses a practical example to demonstrate one of the most common uses of sidechained compression - making a track 'duck' when a kick drum sounds. The kick is routed into the sidechain compressor applied to the pad track, meaning that when kick signal is received, the compressor pulls the pad track down, resulting in the classic 'pumping' effect heard on so many electronic tracks. The same applies to bass tracks, another popular use for this routing technique.

You'll see that sidechaining is quick and easy to set up in FL Studio 20 thanks to its intuitive design, and the results sound great! Be sure to check out the full course for a complete guide to advanced production techniques in FL Studio 20.

For the past few months when I was on hiatus I've learned to work on different DAWs, such as Reaper and OpenMPT. While I was exploring them I realized the production and composition styles had naturally changed for some reason. I went back to my recent tracks produced in OpenMPT to compare to older tracks and while the newer work are messier, the composition is also more diverse. Mainly because of the workflow in OpenMPT is unique enough to affect the production because in a tracker you can easily see the notations and therefore much ease to create your melodies. Where in FL Studio, most of my workflows depended on doing by listening, of course since I'm theory-illiterate and therefore the older work were less diverse of variety.

Learning how to use Reaper also affects my mixing and mastering quality. I've found it's a lot easier to mix in Reaper for some reason I can't explain yet. Reaper's workflows are familiar in the sense of very easy to navigate and it helps to improve how I organize tools and samples.
